21st Century Mindset: Fostering Workplace Diversity
Purpose: To engage in conversation about the critical mindset to embrace diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEIB) in the workplace. Creating a safe and equitable workplace starts with understanding DEIB concepts, and how to model, and put practices into action. 21st Century definition of DEIB will also be discussed.
The uncertainties of the last two years have taught us to expect the unexpected – or rather, not to expect anything at all, because chances are, things will continue to change. When it comes to the future of work, however, there is at least one thing we can bet on in 2022- whether your workplace is hybrid, face to face or a combination of both; diversity in the workplace will increase.
Workplace climate is a product of the interactions among and experiences of the individuals that make up a work community and includes shared norms, values, and everyday behavior expectations. Hallmarks of a positive workplace climate are perceptions of emotional and physical safety, support, inclusiveness, respect, challenge, and engagement. This session will focus on DEIB being more than policies, programs, or headcounts. Equitable employers outpace their competitors by respecting the unique needs, perspectives, and potential of all their team members. As a result, diverse and inclusive workplaces earn deeper trust and more commitment from their employees.
Research shows that the need to belong in the workplace comes second only to the need to belong at home. Belonging and being included at work is important for so many employees, especially those who are of the millennium generation. In response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, more organizations have shifted to remote and blended work situations. With that, there is a much-needed emphasis for leaders to not only communicate the importance of diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, but also identify the behaviors that create conditions where employees feel marginalized. Regardless of race, gender, and all dimensions of diversity, employees want and need to feel included and really a part of the organization. DEIB are sensitive topics for workplace discussions but are much needed. The goal of this session is to provide 21st Century terminology and concepts that will assist individuals with
engaging, and facilitating these crucial courageous conversations.
